Three-time U.S. women's shot put champion and Nike professional athlete Chase Ealey joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her 62-1.25 (18.93m) performance April 24 at the USATF Grand Prix at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., which took over the American lead this year and ranks No. 5 in the world during the outdoor season. Ealey reflects on the challenges that came with competing in inclement weather and how pleased she was to also produce a mark of 62-1 (18.92m) before the rain significantly impacted the competition. She shares how fellow American Jessica Ramsey fell twice during the competition and how several throwers explained the need to acid wash the throwing ring at Hayward Field prior to the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships and Olympic Trials in June. Ealey, who recovered from a difficult and lengthy experience with COVID-19 in May, examines her outdoor progression from a 59-1.50 (18.02m) effort April 3 at the first High Performance meet at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center to a 60-1 (18.31m) performance April 10 at the Miramar Invitational in Florida to her marks at the USATF Grand Prix. She examines the purpose and intent with her training in Arizona under coach Ryan Whiting and how, in 2019, she was often focusing on peaking at meets, leading to Ealey surpassing the 19-meter barrier at 10 competitions, in comparison to this year, with all the focus on the Olympic Trials in June and the preparation for the Tokyo Olympics. Ealey reveals the confidence established from prevailing against Jamaican standout Danniel Thomas-Dodd at Hayward Field, and the reassurance gained from being back among the top five performers in the world, along with New Zealand's Valerie Adams, as well as Chinese athletes Lijiao Gong and Jiayuan Song. She analyzes the depth of the women's shot put in the U.S., and the appreciation for Olympic gold medalist Michelle Carter pursuing her final Olympic berth this summer. Ealey also expresses her respect and enthusiasm for the consistency of fellow shot putter and world indoor record holder Ryan Crouser and the historic 2020 resume he produced, along with the efforts of American discus record holder Valarie Allman and American hammer record holder DeAnna Price. |
